Comox Valley Search & Rescue is a fantastic and diverse group of volunteers who come from all walks of life.  CVSAR volunteer for different reason and all pursue a variety of hobbies and occupations outside of SAR, but they all have one common goal, helping those in need when it matters most.  Enjoy our blog series “Who We Are – CVSAR” and learn about all the people that make CVSAR such a great volunteer organization to be a part of.

What do you do outside of SAR for work/hobbies?
I have been an educator for over 35 years as a teacher, a Principal and currently as Director of Instruction. In addition, I am an Emergency Management consultant assisting School Districts across North America with emergency preparedness and response and a sessional instructor and the Current Ground Search and Rescue Sessional Training Coordinator with The Justice Institute of BC. During quiet times I am a woodworker, a trail runner and a gardener.

What is your role in SAR?

I have been a member of CVGSAR for over 20 year. Have been a member of the Board of Directors for over 18 years much of that time as President. I have been a swiftwater rescue tech, an avalanche team member, a tracker and hold certifications in Light Urban Search and Rescue and advanced Wilderness First Aid and Search Management. I see one of my biggest role as an instructor and mentor for younger SAR members across the Province; teaching Leadership, Search Management, Lost Person Behavior and Incident Command Systems.

What makes you passionate about SAR?
The people… the men… the women who train tirelessly, who respond regardless of the weather to come to the aid of others across our Province.

What’s been the most rewarding part of being a part of SAR?
The rewards are many… some collective… some deeply personal. Ultimately, being a member of this unique SAR family is deeply rewarding.
