Comox Valley Search & Rescue is a fantastic and diverse group of volunteers who come from all walks of life.  CVSAR volunteer for different reason and all pursue a variety of hobbies and occupations outside of SAR, but they all have one common goal, helping those in need when it matters most.  Enjoy our blog series “Who We Are – CVSAR” and learn about all the people that make CVSAR such a great volunteer organization to be a part of.

What do you do outside of SAR for work/hobbies?

I am a retired forester – yup I like the outdoors and that is why SAR seemed to be a good fit for me when I retired.  Outside of SAR I like to multi day kayak, ski, garden, hike, travel and be active. I do have some inside hobbies for those wet ugly cold days in winter – nothing better than cuddling up in front of the wood stove with a good book.

What is your role in SAR?

I am in my 7th year with SAR and am a SAR manager, although I still really like the active field portion of SAR.  I have my Advanced Tracker designation. I have been on the Board of Directors for 5 years now, am currently the Treasurer and I am the “other” Co-Chair of the Membership Committee.

What makes you passionate about SAR? I am passionate about the outdoors and that contributes to my satisfaction of being involved with SAR.  It is sad to realize that my adrenaline rush comes when people are in distress or stressed but it is nothing but positive when we have a good outcome.  Yes, there are some down times but the SAR community looks after its members with Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM).

What’s been the most rewarding part of being a part of SAR?  Being part of a professional group of committed people (people are from all walks of life) that really care about helping others.  It is truly rewarding to see the turn out, regardless of time or day or weather, to help when the call out comes.
